The Billiard Stop
Hey there! I'm glad you've decided to dedicate 10 minutes from your precious time to read this billiard Tutorial. I've written it as simple and easy to understand as possible so anyone could enjoy this valuable information. With that being said, Let's dive in!
Billiard Tutorial Step #1 - Basic concepts of billiards
There are four types of balls in the billiard game:
1. Colored
2. Uncolored (or colored with a line in the middle)
3. The black ball
4. The white ball (also known as the Cue Ball)
Each player is assigned with either the colored or the uncolored balls (More on how the balls are assigned later). The goal is to pocket all of your balls first, and then the black ball, before your opponent does. This is done by striking the white ball and hitting the target balls with it.
Billiard Tutorial Step #2 - The beginning
Wrack the balls in a shape of a triangle, using that black plastic thing at your local billiards hall. Put the black ball in the middle and a colored ball in the front. As for the rest of the balls, put them in a way that there won't be too many balls of the same type clustered together. Now break the balls using the cue ball.
Billiard Tutorial Step #3 - Assigning the type of balls to the players
The first player that pockets a ball, is assigned to that type of balls. For example:
If you're the first one to pocket a ball, and it's a colored ball, then you're assigned to the colored balls. Your opponent is of course assigned to the uncolored balls.
Billiard Tutorial Step #4 - The flow of the game
Each player, in his turn, strikes the cue ball and aims at one of his balls (colored/uncolored). If you make the shot, you get an extra turn. If not, the turn passes to the other player and you get the chance to sit down and relax.
After you pocket all your balls, you need to target the black ball. Before hitting it, you need to declare which pocket you're aiming to put it into.
Fouls and special shots
If you make a foul, the other billiards player receives an extra shot in his turn. Note: Some play in another method. Instead of getting an extra shot, you get to place the white-ball wherever you want in your shot. I personally prefer the first method, that's why I wrote it first in this tutorial.
A foul shot happens when you do one of the following:
1. Hit an opponent's (or the black) ball prior to hitting your own.
2. Not hitting any balls.
3. Pocket the white ball.
4. Pocket an opponent's ball.
Note: If you make a foul while aiming at the black ball, you lose the game.
Another Note: You can't "drag" extra shot. Let me explain with a simple example:
Let's say the other billiards player makes a foul. Then you get an extra shot right? Now, if you pocket one of your balls, you get another turn, BUT, the extra shot from the foul isn't valid anymore. If you miss your next shot, you don't get another one.
Final Thoughts & Conclusions
Quite simple this game of billiard, isn't it? One last thing about how to arrange the balls on the table - I can't explain how to do it here, so just ask someone when you go to a snooker hall.
OK so now you know how to play billiards!
