Shoot to Kill $11.98 Back in 1989, Ice-T described hip-hop, punk, and metal as a "trilogy of rebellion" -- and Ice definitely knew what he was talking about because a long list of artists has been influenced by all three (including Ice himself). The Beastie Boys, let's not forget, were a punk band before they became a hip-hop trio, and they were influenced by metal as well during their early years. So given how long the fusion of hip-hop, punk, and metal has been taking place, it makes perfect sense that West Coast vocalist Brad Xavier, aka Daddy X or Brad X (of Kottonmouth Kings and Humble Gods fame), would want to start a punk band with his ally the Dirtball. That punk band is the X-Pistols, whose debut album, Shoot to Kill, doesn't sound anything like the Kottonmouth Kings but shares their rebellious, in-your-face outlook. Quite often, this early 2011 release sounds like a West Coast punk recording from the late '70s or early '80s; at least that is what happens some of the time. Shoot to Kill is full of songs that would have worked for the Circle Jerks or Black Flag around 1979 or 1980, but that isn't the case on all of the material. Some of the other tracks have more of a hip-hop influence, including "Lock Load Fight Win," "I Hate Pigs," "Love and Tragedy," and "Trapped in a Maze." And Shoot to Kill has its metallic moments as well -- not metallic in the harsh, vicious, unforgiving way that so much death metal, black metal, and metalcore are metallic, but metallic nonetheless. So even though Shoot to Kill is a punk album first and foremost, there is enough hip-hop influence and enough metal influence to make it relevant to the "trilogy of rebellion" that Ice-T spoke of back in 1989. Shoot to Kill doesn't point that trilogy in any new directions, but even so, this is a fun and often infectious (albeit highly derivative) listen from Daddy X and his colleagues. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Jim Perkins - Guitar; Jim Wooding - Bass; Tony Martinez - Guitar |

Permission to Shoot? $129 Extrajudicial executions have blighted parts of the world for generations, but criminological coverage has been superficial and selective, in that it has concentrated on South America giving the impression that this is a problem specific to that part of the world and associated with military rule, dictatorial regimes and colonial heritage. Permission to Shoot?: Police Use of Deadly Force in Democracies brings a new dimension to the problem of police abuse of deadly force by concentrating on India and the United States, both large democracies and vibrant superpowers. In the book, the research is based on primary sources-interviews with police officers of varying ranks: those who are involved in the killings; those who facilitate such operations; and those who are mute spectators. The book deals with universal, fundamental themes such as: what makes ordinary, decent human beings do horrible things? What motivational techniques and justifications are used to override social norms governing moral conduct, centring on the sector of society mandated to use deadly force against civilians? Why in a democratic country the abuse of police powers appears to be overtly and tacitly encouraged?. Permission to Shoot? seeks to provide broad guidelines and recommendations for reforms in policing policy and practice in developing countries. The research peels back the lies and deceit that surround this issue, but more than that it shows how those lies and deceit act to support the practice itself. |

Shoot the Widow $18.99 The first rule of biography, wrote Justin Kaplan: “Shoot the widow.” In her new book, Meryle Secrest, acclaimed biographer (“Knowing, sympathetic and entertainingly droll”— The New York Times ), writes about her comic triumphs and misadventures as a biographer in search of her nine celebrated subjects, about how the hunt for a “life” is like working one’s way through a maze, full of fall starts, dead ends, and occasional clear passages leading to the next part of the puzzle. She writes about her first book, a life of Romaine Brooks, and how she was led to Nice and given invaluable letters by her subject’s heir that were slid across the table, one at a time; how she was led to the villa of Brooks’ lover, Gabriele d’Annunzio (poet, playwright, and aviator), a fantastic mausoleum left untouched since the moment of his death seventy years before; to a small English village, where she uncovered a lost Romaine Brooks painting; and finally, to 20, rue Jacob, Paris, where Romaine’s lover, Natalie Barney, had fifty years before entertained Cocteau, Gide, Proust, Colette, and others. Secrest describes how her next book—a life of Berenson—prompted Francis Steegmuller, fellow biographer, to comment that he wouldn’t touch the subject with a ten-foot pole. For her life of British art historian Kenneth Clark, Secrest was given permission to write the book by her subject, who surreptitiously financed it in the hopes of controlling its contents; we see how Clark’s plan was foiled by a jealous mistress and a stash of love letters that helped Secrest navigate Clark’s obstacle course. Among the other biographical (mis)adventures, Secrest reveals: how she tracked Salvador Dalí to a hospital room, found him recovering from serious burns sustained in a mysterious fire, and learned that he was knee-deep in a scandal involving fake drawings and prints and surrounded by dangerous characters out of Murder, Inc. . . . and how she went in search of a subject’s grave (Frank Lloyd Wright’s) only to find that his body had been dug up to satisfy the whim of his last wife. A fascinating account of a life spent in sometimes arduous, sometimes comical, always exciting pursuit of the truth about other lives. From the Hardcover edition. |

Joining a Pool League
Fall is approaching and summer sports are winding down. Need something to do during the colder months? Join a pool league. You don't need much, a Pool Cue, some spare time in the afternoons, and a place to play.
Equipment
Before you get all gung-ho about joining, anybody will tell you that you will need some equipment to Improve Your ability. The most important piece of equipment is a decent pool cue. You need a decent pool cue because it will help you maintain a consistent shot. You will know what condition the tip is in, and how it will react when you apply english. A good pool cue is essential to consistent play.
Location
Location is another thing to consider when joining a pool league. A place close to home is ideal if you end up shooting late and have to work early. Pool halls often offer leagues with many teams so you don't have to travel to a different bar or even a different town.
Time
When I lived in Wisconsin, the league season was quite long. That was the thing that bugged me the most. I loved to play, I still do, but it should have been broken into 2 seasons with a break. Make sure that you have the time to commit to your team before you join.
Team
Joining a league with some friends makes it infinitely more enjoyable. It is something to look forward to during the week and can be very therapeutic. When teaming up with friends, you also know how they shoot compared with strangers.
Joining a pool league can be a great way to break up the week and get out to have a bit of fun. If can be a great time to hang out with some friends you wouldn't otherwise see during the week. So if you are looking for something to do over the colder months, try joining a pool league with a few of your friends.
