Networking and Online Games $110 The computer game industry is clearly growing in the direction of multiplayer, online games. Understanding the demands of games on IP (Internet Protocol) networks is essential for ISP (Internet Service Provider) engineers to develop appropriate IP services. Correspondingly, knowledge of the underlying network's capabilities is vital for game developers. Networking and Online Games concisely draws together and illustrates the overlapping and interacting technical concerns of these sectors. The text explains the principles behind modern multiplayer communication systems and the techniques underlying contemporary networked games. The traffic patterns that modern games impose on networks, and how network performance and service level limitations impact on game designers and player experiences, are covered in-depth, giving the reader the knowledge necessary to develop better gaming products and network services. Examples of real-world multiplayer online games illustrate the theory throughout. Networking and Online Games::; Provides a comprehensive, cutting-edge guide to the development and service provision needs of online, networked games.; Contrasts the considerations of ISPs (e.g. predicting traffic loads) with those of game developers (e.g. sources of lag/jitter), clarifying coinciding requirements.; Explains how different technologies such as cable, ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) and wireless, etc., affect online game-play experience, and how different game styles impose varying traffic dynamics and requirements on the network.; Discusses future directions brought by emerging technologies such as UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone Service), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), Wireless LANs, IP service Quality, and NAPT/NAT (Network Address Port Translation/Network Address Translation); Illustrates the concepts using high-level examples of existing multiplayer online games (such as Quake III Arena, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, and Half-Life 2). Networking and Online Games will be an invaluable resource for games developers, engineers and technicians at Internet Service Providers, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Multimedia Engineering. |

Free Online Games- Are They Worth It?
I am an average internet surfer, and when I say average, what I meant was that I surf the net sometimes just for the sake of surfing. Why wouldn't I when the online world is full of things to explore and new information to grasp. This quest led me to sites that offer things for free. Who doesn't like free stuff? After all, the internet is full of them- downloadable movies, e-books, music and more. They promise that you would get them with no hidden charge whatsoever only to learn that links are either broken or worse, your beloved computer just got itself infected.
Then all of a sudden here comes sites that offer online games for free. Even better, there are no downloads needed to play them so you can save yourself from hours of waiting before you can test whether or not the site is working. This now leads us to check whether the free online games being offered by these sites are even worth it. One of the sites that I have chosen to check out is Twizl.com. At first glance you can see that it has a very simple and organized platform which for me is a big plus. I have been looking at other flash games sites and this particular one caught my attention. Aside from the large icons that separates games into categories, the site also boasts of having almost a complete list of games in various genres. True to its words, you can see games that range from dress up for girls, shooting for boys and classics for the kids at heart. This site also has a very cute icon of a red dinosaur playing with a console set in a black background. In fact, the whole site is set in a red and black theme which for me is very pleasing to the eyes.
I have chosen to try out racing games in Twizl mainly because the site offers a handful of them. You can see racing games like The Heist and Deadly Race which can be fun if you like to trample on every known car on the road. Twizl even offers 3D games such as Burning Rubber and Space Daytona. It pleases me because I rarely find 3D games in the flash games area. To think that they are free is such pleasant surprise. My most favourite racing game in Twizl though is the Mario Racing Tournament. Trust me; it will really bring out the kid in you. Maybe I just missed the characters who have accompanied me in my childhood years or I just find it plain awesome to see this kind of game in a free gaming site, but I really had fun while checking this game out. Graphics are good and even the sound quality is not at all bad. You also rarely see any crash in the gameplay which I really appreciate.
Overall, if you would ask me if free online games is worth trying, I would say yes it is. The main point is this, while online games are really fun to play with, it also depends on the site you are playing them. Just like the rest of the sites online, not all free games sites can be trusted. Look for the trusted ones, or better yet, try the site that I have already mentioned in this article.
